could / was, were able to 차이점
could와 was/were able to는 과거에는 갖고 있었으나 현재는 없는 능력에 대해서 표현할 때 사용한다.
When I was young, I was able to speak two languages.
내가 어렸을 때, 난 2개의 언어를 말할 수 있었다.
When I was young, I could speak two languages.
내가 어렸을 때, 난 2개의 언어를 말할 수 있었다.
하지만 과거 어떤 특정 사건에 관련된 행동/능력을 얘기할 때는 was/were able to 만을 사용해야 한다.
I was able to surprise my teacher yesterday.
난 어제 선생님을 놀라게 했었다.
Don’t say: I could surprise my teacher yesterday.
어제 선생님을 놀라게 한 사건이기 때문에 특정 사건에 대해서 얘기하는 것이다. 따라서 could를 사용하면 안 된다.
과거의 특정 이벤트에 대해서 see, hear, feel, taste와 같은 상태 동사를 사용할 때는 could , was/were able 모두 사용 가능하다.
I was able to see the teacher well from my seat yesterday.
난 어제 내 자리에서 선생님을 잘 볼 수 있었다.
I could see the teacher well from my seat yesterday.
난 어제 내 자리에서 선생님을 잘 볼 수 있었다.
과거의 이벤트에 대해서 부정문 사용할 때는 couldn't, wan't/weren't able to 모두 사용이 가능하다.
I wasn’t able to surprise my teacher yesterday. or I was never able to surprise my teacher.
I couldn’t surprise my teacher yesterday. or I couldn’t ever surprise my teacher.
난 어제 선생님을 놀라게 할 수 없었다.
